"Doctors weigh in on FedEx proposal"

As physicians practicing in Greensboro, we believe the quality of life of residents in our community is greatly determined by clean air, clean water and minimal noise pollution. The neglect of these features of our environment can be detrimental to citizens' health.

The FAA's Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) assessing the impact of the proposed FedEx air cargo hub on our environment has apparent oversights and deficiencies that make it inadequate and unreliable. It failed to mention hazardous air pollutants or toxic emissions from the projected aircraft operations at the hub. It does not include a verifiable assessment of air pollutants from on-site and off-site trucking. Also, an inappropriate 24-hour averaging of noise is used to evaluate the impact of noise on residents living in proximity to the airport. The DEIS makes no mention of any health impacts of pollution or noise on area residents. The Environmental Protection Agency responded to the DEIS by issuing a preference for the "no action (no hub) alternative."

We believe the investigation of noise, air and water pollutants associated with the hub and the possible consequent effects on health must be thoroughly evaluated by independent and unbiased experts. Until appropriate studies using acceptable methods are conducted, we do not support plans to establish an air cargo hub at the Piedmont Triad Airport. The health of residents in this community must be preserved as our economy expands and diversifies.
